Arneai Ancient City: The Mysterious Capital of the Kasaba Valley

The Ancient City of Arneai is located in the northeast of the strategic region known as the Kasaba Valley in antiquity, near the Demre district of Antalya. Situated on a hill approximately 500 meters south of the Ernez village, which lies between Seydikemer and Demre, the city’s name is the direct source of the village’s name today. “Ernez” is a living reflection of the thousands-of-years-old name “Arneai” in our modern language.

Although its name does not appear frequently in historical records, the epigraphic findings recovered from the city prove that it held the status of a regional “capital.” During the Roman period, Arneai formed a Sympoliteia (political partnership) with the nearby city of Koroa and served as the center of this union.

Arneai Ancient City’s Unique Architectural Structure: Lycia’s Only Official Guest House

The Ancient City of Arneai is home to a revolutionary structure that sets it apart from all other Lycian cities: the Parokhion. This structure, which has not been encountered in any other city in the Lycian region to date, can be defined as an official “guest house” or “hostel” of the ancient period.

Another interesting feature of the city is the functional transformation of its buildings. The fact that a Roman-era bath was later converted into a different structure (likely a guest house) demonstrates how the city shaped its architecture according to changing needs. Inscribed blocks built into the fortification walls clearly document this bath to guest house conversion. You can examine these interesting architectural transformations by comparing them with the chronological development on our Lycian History page.

Arneai’s Philanthropist: The Noble Lalla and Her Legacy

The most brilliant figure in the history of the Ancient City of Arneai is undoubtedly the noblewoman, Lalla. As the wife of Dioteimos and a Priestess of the Imperial Cult, Lalla revitalized the city by donating 3,000 denarii from her own wealth for the restoration of the parokhion (guest house) and the bathhouse. Honored by the city council for this great generosity, Lalla stands as one of the most significant examples illustrating the social and economic power of women in Lycia.

This donation by Lalla also proves that Arneai was not just a military or administrative center, but also a prestige center where diplomatic guests were hosted. While tracing the footsteps of this noblewoman, you can also feel the presence of other female figures and the social structure of the region at the stops along the Lycian Way.

Archaeological Remains and the Local God Tobaloas

Although most of the structures within the walls have been destroyed by the abrasive effects of time, there are still many points worth seeing in the Ancient City of Arneai:

  • Walls and Towers: The city’s defense line remains in quite good condition in some places.
  • Byzantine Church: Arneai was a strategic episcopal center affiliated with Myra during the Byzantine period and was mentioned in the 9th rank. The church ruins reflect the religious architecture of this period.
  • Workshops: Olive oil or wine workshops that provide clues about the ancient city’s economic production areas.
  • Tobaloas Inscription: An inscription found in the city is dedicated to Tobaloas, the local god of the region. This is one of the strongest proofs that Lycia preserved its local Anatolian beliefs.

The variety of Lycian Flora that you can encounter on the slopes and hillsides of the city, combined with the ancient ruins, offers visitors a unique nature hiking opportunity.
